Home remodeling is not for the faint of heart. All the design changes, the mess, the house turned upside down, contractors coming and going – it almost seems like it would be easier to move out or burn the house down! When it’s time to select your remodeling contractor, Gerbus Remodeling suggests following these guidelines from the National Association of Home Builders:
Contact your local home builders association for names of member remodelers. Gerbus Remodeling is an active member of the Cincinnati HBA. In fact, one of our partners, Alan Gerbus, is a past President of the organization.
Ask for referrals from friends and family.
Make sure your home remodeler has a permanent business location and a good reputation with banks and trade partners.
Does the remodeling contractor work with the best trade partners in the area? At Gerbus Remodeling, we work with award-winning Rod Sidley Architects for our design work and some of the area’s finest locally owned and nationally recognized trade partners and suppliers.
Find out more about your remodeler – how long have they been in business, do they warranty their work, do they have references, and are they financially sound?
Do they carry workers compensation and general liability insurance to protect you and your property in the event of an accident?
Can you see samples of their work?
Do you feel you can easily communicate with your remodeling contractor? Remember, you will be spending a great deal of time with them throughout the process.
Make sure your remodeling contractor provides you with a written contract and budget.
Be cautious of the lowest priced bid. If a remodeling contractor is unable to pay for materiel and labor, this may indicate an issue and will likely fall back on you and your property if bills go unpaid.
