Fall is in the air. The days are getting shorter and the temperature is feeling a little cooler. But before you head out for that pumpkin latte, it’s time to show your home a little love with some preventative fall home maintenance. Homes by Gerbus, a 3rd generation Cincinnati custom home builder, recommends the following tips to have you and your home ready for the first snow flake!
1. Seal any air leaks around windows and doors.
2. Check your roof.
3. Clean your gutters and downspouts.
4. Check and replace batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors
5. Adjust your thermostat and switch to a smart thermostat if you haven’t already!
6. Have your furnace and fireplace checked and cleaned.
7. Check your filters. We recommend changing your HVAC filter on a monthly basis.
8. Prep your lawn, planting beds, and trees.
9. Clean and store lawn equipment, outdoor furniture, and flower pots.
10. Disconnect and store hoses.
11. Drain your sprinkler system.
12. Inspect and clean your fireplace chimney.
13. Clean and vacuum behind your refrigerator, freezer, and range.
14. Seal your driveway and patio concrete to prevent concrete spalling.
15. Clean your dryer vent.
16. Check the snowblower and make sure you have gas for the blower.
17. Check the propane in your outdoor fireplace.
18. Check and change filters in your appliances.
19. Plant trees and shrubs.
20.Plant fall bulbs when ground temperatures reach 40 – 50 degrees.
